Richard Grayson, The Magpie Index, 18 January-12 February 2012
The Magpie Index is a single-screen high-definition video artwork by artist Richard Grayson, focusing on legendary singer-songwriter Roy Harper. This will be Grayson’s third exhibition at Matt’s Gallery.

Nathaniel Mellors, The Nest, Cobra Museum, Amstelveen, until 4 March 2012
This major solo show at the Cobra Museum is a result of Nathaniel Mellors winning the 2011 Cobra Art Prize. The exhibition is accompanied by a new publication of the same name, featuring a text by Dan Fox and design by Chris Bloor. Nathaniel Mellors will be having an exhibition at Matt’s Gallery from 18 April-27 May 2012.
Willie Doherty, Photo/text/85/92: One Place Twice, Alexander and Bonin, New York, 28 January-10 March 2012
This solo exhibition presents a series of Willie Doherty’s early black and white photographs with text. These rarely-seen works will also be exhibited at Matt’s Gallery from 18 April to 27 May 2012. In conjunction with these exhibitions the galleries are producing a new publication with an essay by Declan Long.
Lindsay Seers, A Trip to the Moon, Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, 8 February-8 April 2012
A Trip to the Moon is an exhibition focusing on the relationship between art and film. Is it part of a collaborative project between Bonniers Konsthall and Moderna Museet. The exhibition includes Lindsay Seers’ work Extramission 6 (Black Maria), 2009.
Emma Hart, All Action No Mouths, Banner Repeater, London, until 22 January 2012
Emma Hart’s new video work for Banner Repeater considers the structures of the documentary, through an absurdist lens that focuses on the multiple directions of the arrow that weaves throughout her practice.
Emma Hart, Word Processor, Stanley Picker Gallery, Kingston University, 25 January 2012, 7pm
Word Processor is a Research Statement Performance Event forming part of Emma Hart’s Fine Art PhD thesis with the Contemporary Art Research Centre, Kingston University. The event is being developed as the direct result of a three-week period of residency at the Stanley Picker Gallery through January 2012, during which the artist will build a conceptual writing machine and become a word processor.

Emma Hart’s video Dice is showing at Their Wonderlands, an international group exhibition curated by multi-disciplinary collective They Are Here. Contemporary artists have been drawn together to explore the space given to make-believe and folklore in post-industrial 21st century European society.

Kate Smith, Gallery North, Newcastle, until 27 January 2012
This solo exhibition includes a new series of drawings, Work in Progress, which expand sculpturally, alongside Levitation, 1993, which was first shown at Matt’s Gallery. There will be a catalogue launch and artist’s panel on 19 January at 5pm.
Imogen Stidworthy has curated this group exhibition which features work by around twenty artists, including Matthew Tickle, Paul McCarthy and Phil Collins. The exhibition explores the encounter, entanglement and transfer of meanings, the movement from one set of terms to another, as well as ideas of opacity and relational resistance.
Graham Fagen, Under Heavy Manners, ArtPace, San Antonio, Texas, until January 2012
This solo exhibition is a result of Graham Fagen’s recent residency at ArtPace. Building on two decades of work dedicated to examining the ways in which culture is produced and negotiated by people and objects, he has focused his attention on human teeth as a symbolic means to understand complex physical and emotional relationships.

Graham Fagen’s specially commissioned two screen video installation Missing inaugurates the contemporary programme at the re-opening of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, following two years of closure for refurbishment.

This exhibition includes Ben Rivers’ work Slow Action, 2010, which was shown at Matt’s Gallery in 2011 and commissioned by Picture This and Animate Projects in association with Matt’s Gallery, London.
Jimmie Durham, Before the Law, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, until 22 April 2012
This group exhibition asks how art can address injustice and infringements on human dignity without being didactic. It includes Jimmie Durham’s major installation work Building a Nation, which was commissioned by Matt’s Gallery in 2006 which has recently been acquired for the Museum Ludwig collection.
Susan Hiller, From Here to Eternity, Kunsthalle Nuremberg, Germany, until 19 February 2012
This exhibition is Susan Hiller’s first major solo show in Germany, and features works from the late 1980s alongside more recent pieces. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with a new text by Richard Grayson.
Hayley Newman, Not if but when: Culture Beyond Oil, publication
Not if but when: Culture Beyond Oil is a publication edited by Jo Clarke, Mel Evans, Hayley Newman, Kevin Smith and Glen Tarman. It sets out to discuss oil sponsorship of the arts. The single issue, limited edition publication features artworks in dialogue with the BP Gulf of Mexico catastrophe and articles that set out the compelling arguments for an end to BP and Shell’s involvement with many of the nation’s favourite cultural institutions. Holly Slingsby, Props for the Sky at SHIFT Gallery, London 21-22 January
Holly Slingsby has developed a new performance work taking place over three days at SHIFT. In this work the artist takes on the guise of a series of gods and mythical characters, using improvised costumes and props. As the performance progresses, these deities make and remake themselves, producing a series of hybrids – gods with vanity problems, gender confusion and split personalities.
