Current Exhibition at Matt’s Gallery
Throughout the summer Roy Voss has been using the gallery as a studio to produce a new body of work for his first exhibition at Matt’s Gallery. Pine centres on the relationships between object and image. Assisted readymades – adapted domestic lamps in the form of figures, plants and buildings – populate a reconfigured gallery space adorned with large-scale painted backdrops and digitally printed wallpaper of landscapes containing single words. The exhibition will be open from 10 September-2 November.

Artists news, exhibitions, awards and events
Here are some of the highlights of September and October:
David Osbaldeston will be presenting The Pleasure of Your Company, at the ICA Upper Galleries as part of Nought to Sixty, a programme of solo exhibitions and events by sixty artists and collectives from the UK, over a six month period. The Pleasure of Your Company consists of 57 etchings reproducing private-view cards, one for each year of the ICA’s history of solo shows. The exhibition runs from 15 -22 September 2008.
New work by Mike Nelson can be seen in Reality Check, a major exhibition at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, open to the public 6 September-4 January 2009.
Mike Nelson will also be participting in Altermodern: Tate Triennial 2009, along with Nathaniel Mellors and Lindsay Seers who will be showing at Matt‘s Gallery in January 2009. The fourth Tate Triennial will run from 3 February-26 April and be curated by Nicolas Bourriaud.

A 20 minute edit of REAP, a project curated by Anne Bean in which all the work related to the notion of one year (2004/05), will be shown as part of Twilight an evening of film and performance to celebrate the Autumn Equinox at the Café Gallery Projects, Southwark on 21 September.

Anne Bean is also involved in Power Plant, a site-specific sound and light installation event for Liverpool 08 European Capital of Culture, commissioned by Contemporary Music Network. The event can be seen in Calderstones Park, Liverpool from 8-12 October 2008.

As part of the Liverpool Biennial, the A Foundation are inviting international guests to join them to explore the politics and aesthetics of the contemporary imagination. Made Up Weekend will be a series of conversations, performances and screenings during which Anne Bean will perform with Richard Wilson. Made Up Weekend will take place 23-25 October at the A Foundation, Greenland Street, Liverpool.
Boulder an ambitious public realm sculpture project by John Frankland in association with Peer, has recently been unveiled and features two new permanent sculptures in Shoreditch Park and Mabley Green, London. A film documenting the work and reactions of the local communities, is on show at Peer’s gallery 3 September-11 October.
Imogen Stidworthy and Paul Rooney have been shortlisted for the Northern Art Prize 2008. An exhibition of shortlisted artists’ work will show at Leeds Art Gallery from 21 November 2008 until 1 February 2009. The winner will be announced on 15 January 2009.
Lucy Gunning is participating in the group exhibition Concrete Dreams at the APT Gallery, Deptford from 4-21 September 2008.
Melanie Jackson has been appointed Head of Undergraduate Sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, taking over from Phyllida Barlow who is now Head of Undergraduate Studies.
The Imperial War Museum is showing Theatre, a work by Graham Fagen, in a group show entitled Breakthrough, which is a major re-hang of the museum’s collection of British art. The show will continue until 31st December 2008.

Nathaniel Mellors is participating in the Serpentine Gallery’s Manifesto Marathon as part of the gallery’s Park Nights Event Programme. The event is a 12 hour interview event taking place 18-19 October, where manifestos for the 21st century by leading artists, architects, scientists, writers and philosophers will be presented.
Hayley Newman’s work Volcano Lady in part of an exhibition entitled Smoke at the Pump House Gallery, Battersea Park from 5 October-15 December. A double sided print of this work is included in Matt’s Gallery’s first print portfolio.

Intern News
Rebecca Birch, a former Matt’s Gallery intern is currently showing in a group show Invention (2) at City Gallery Off-Site Projects, Leicester.
Matt’s Gallery are searching for a new Stanley Picker Intern. The internship is an opportunity for a recent graduate or postgraduate to gain valuable experience working as part of the gallery team, and is offered on a part-time, paid basis for a six month period beginning in January 2009. Publications and Editions
To accompany his exhibition Pine at Matt’s Gallery 10 September-02 November, Roy Voss has produced an editioned lino cut print. Vitis vinifera L. is a new Matt’s Gallery publication by Alison Turnbull. The publication documents Alison Turnbull’s commission for One Vine Street, undertaken during 2008 as part of The Crown Estate’s redevelopment of the area. This new, fully illustrated publication includes an essay by Paul Bonaventura which places the work in the wider context of the artist’s research and studio practice.
Paul Rooney’s fiction work is included in a new publication from Art Editions North entitled Wrongteous. The hardback book, edited by Paul Rooney and Leo Fitzmaurice, incorporates existing and newly commissioned UK and international art and fiction writing. Wrongteous is available through Art Editions North and will be lauched at A Foundation, Greenland Street, Liverpool on 19 September 2008.
