Two Matt’s Gallery artists exhibit at Venice Biennale.

Current exhibition at Matt’s Gallery

Matt’s Gallery’s current exhibition is The Golden Space City of God by Richard Grayson. Co-commissioned by Matt’s Gallery, London and Artpace, San Antonio, Texas, The Golden Space City of God is a large-scale video and choral music installation based on web-sourced predictions of war, computers, banking, robotics and the end of the world. The video projection features the first choral performance of a new work by British composer Leo Chadburn, with a libretto written by the artist based on material from a website associated with The Family. The Golden Space City of God will continue until 28 June 2009.

Installation for the next exhibition at Matt’s Gallery is now underway. Jordan Baseman’s Blue Movie will be shown from 4-26 July on Saturdays and Sundays only.

Artists exhibitions, projects, awards and events

Here are some highlights for May and June 2009:

Matt’s Gallery artists Nathaniel Mellors and Jordan Baseman will be exhibiting at Artsway’s New Forest Pavilion during the 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale de Venezia 2009. The pavilion at Palazzo Zenobio will be open to the public from 7-28 June 2009.

Fiona Crisp is exhibiting a series of photographs entitled Stourhead Series in FotoGrafia, International Photography Festival, Rome from 29 May-2 August 2009.

At Your Service, a group show at The David Roberts Art Foundation, London will inlude work by Paul Rooney. The exhibition is the first in the Foundation’s Curators’ Series and continues until 27 June 2009.

A solo show of Nathaniel Mellors’ Giantbum will be showing at Stedelijk Museum Bureau, Amsterdam from 29 May-12 July 2009. Giantbum will also be showing at Montehermoso, Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain from 22 May-30 August 2009.

Willie Doherty will be in conversation with Seamus McGarvey at a special event for the Edinburgh International Film Festival on 19 June. A screening of Ghost Story will be followed by a discussion.

Michael Curran is currently showing at Area 53, Vienna in a group show by Five Years, a London based artists’ association, entitled Free Association. The exhibition runs from 20 May-19 June 2009.

On 10 May Michael Curran gave a performance at Five Years Free School, Regent Studios, London. The performance took the form of a life drawing class involving personal memoir, bodily sounding with readings and improvisations by members of the class. Filmed documentation of this event and the resulting drawings will form the core of a participatory drawing space for the Autumn.

Tesla’s Room, a solo show of Matthew Tickle’s work will be shown at Hovel, 37 Evelina Mansions, New Church Road, Camberwell, London from 6-28 June on Saturdays and Sundays only from 12-6pm.

Alison Turnbull will be showing in In Between the Line: Recent British Drawing at Trinity Fine Art, London from 25 June to 10 July 2009. The exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with essays by Jeremy Cooper and Catherine Lampert.

Anne Bean has been awarded a Legacy: Thinker in Residence award by Live Art Development Agency and Tate Research.

As part of PAVES, a year-long project bringing together artists working in Croatia, Israel, Kurdistan, England and Northern Ireland, Anne will be travelling to Staglinec, Croatia for the next phase of the project which will take place in June.

A film entitled 5 Drawings by Anne Bean will be shown as part of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition from 8 June-16 August.

The City Gallery, Leicester will also show Alison Turnbull’s work as part of the exhibition Pattern Recognition from 20 June-24 October 2009, in which artists will show work exploring the emergence and dissolution of pattern.

Jordan Baseman will be exhibiting new work in Commonwealth Suite at Collective, Edinburgh from 23 May to 17 July. The show features two separate Collective film commissions by Jordan Baseman and Henna-Riikka Halonen filmed in Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool.

Continuing Exhibitions

The following exhibitions and events were featured in the January-February News page but are still running throughout March-April:

Jordan Basemans solo exhibition Dark is the Night, comprising new work created in and around Soho throughout 2008/09, is showing at The Photographers’ Gallery, London from 23 April-13 June 2009. A publication will accompany the exhibition.

Anne Bean will be showing work at Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne in the exhibition Notes on a Return where residual fragments from performances at the gallery during 1985-1987 and will be traced and re-exhibited. Audio and archival installations will be presented from 18 April-30 August 2009.

A major exhibition of films and photographs by Willie Doherty will be shown at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh from 25 April-12 July 2009. Ghost Story has also recently been purchased by the Tate.

Carolyn Thompson has been commissioned to produce a sound piece for Bury Art Gallery and Museum. The piece entitled Progress be shown as part of The Text Festival from 2 May-12 September 2009.

Publications and Editions

Matt’s Gallery will be publishing a new monograph on the work of Fiona Crisp in June 2009. Hyper Passive surveys the visual, conceptual and philosophical aspects of Fiona Crisp’s large-scale photographic work over the past decade, and places it in the wider historical context of art and photography. This fully illustrated publication includes an essay by Professor Christopher Townsend (Royal Holloway, University of London) and an interview with Alessandro Vincentelli (BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead).
The book is distributed by Cornerhouse and will be available online via the Matt’s Gallery website, at the gallery and in all good bookshops.

A publication also entitled The Golden Space City of God, will accompany Richard Grayson’s exhibition at Matt’s Gallery, with a text by Andrew Brighton. The publication is the nineteenth in the second series of Matt’s Gallery booklets and is available free to visitors throughout the exhibition. To accompany his exhibition The Golden Space City of God at Matt’s Gallery 13 May-28 June 2009, Richard Grayson has produced two editioned prints. Published by The Photographer’s Gallery and Artsway, the publication Dark is the Night, accompanies Jordan Baseman’s exhibition of the same name currently showing at The Photographer’s Gallery, London until 13 June. With text by David Barrett and Gemma Seltzer the publication is available from The Photographer’s Gallery and Art Data.

Host Artists Group have released a CD of their 9th project Otherliness, which includes work by Carl von Weiler amongst other Host artists. The project was first presented as an audio exhibition at the Vane Gallery, Newcastle on 16 May 2009. Host 9: Otherliness can be purchased directly from Host.
